Authority: how to become a brand AI cites and recommends

Once AI can find and understand you, the contest begins: of all the brands it could name, why you? Authority is layer three of AI Alignment — earning the mentions and citations that make models choose you.

Multiple independent sources — articles, forums, review sites — all pointing to one brand, which an AI then cites in its answer.

By now you’re found (Discoverability) and understood (Clarity). Those are table stakes. Authority is where the actual competition happens — because for any real buying question, the model has more brands it could name than it will. Authority is what decides which ones make the cut.

The good news: there’s hard data on what builds it, and a lot of it contradicts what twenty years of SEO trained us to believe.

Authority in AI looks different from authority in SEO

In classic SEO, authority was largely a story about your domain — backlinks, Domain Rating, on-site signals. In AI search, the centre of gravity moves off your site and onto the open web.

Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands to see what correlates with brand visibility in AI answers. The standouts:

  • Brand web mentions had the strongest correlation with AI Overview brand visibility (0.664).
  • Brand anchors (links using your brand name) followed at 0.527, and brand search demand at 0.392.
  • Classic site metrics lagged: Domain Rating ~0.266, and the number of pages on your site ~0.194 — almost no relationship at all.
  • Across platforms, YouTube mentions showed the single strongest correlation with visibility (~0.737).

Their summary is the line to tattoo on the wall: AI visibility isn’t just about your website — it’s about how widely your brand shows up across the web1. This is exactly why AI citations behave so differently from backlinks: a backlink passes equity to a page; a mention builds the brand entity’s standing whether or not it links anywhere.

The mental shift: stop thinking “how do I build my domain’s authority?” and start thinking “how do I get my brand talked about, credibly, in the places models read?”

Find the sources that decide your category

Authority isn’t built evenly across the web — it’s built in specific places models trust for your category. Across tens of millions of AI citations, a familiar set of domains dominates: Reddit, YouTube, and LinkedIn lead2, with Wikipedia heavy on ChatGPT and review sites like G2 showing up on recommendation queries. And on the SEO-overlap side, Ahrefs found that 38% of AI Overview citations come from pages already ranking in the top 103 — so classic ranking still feeds the machine, even as it stops being the whole game.

But don’t optimise for the global list — optimise for yours. Your audit already captured the domains models cite when answering questions in your category. That citation list is your authority target list. If three review sites and two comparison articles show up again and again in answers that recommend your competitors and skip you, you’ve just found your roadmap.

The authority playbook

Here’s what actually moves the needle, roughly in order of leverage.

1. Earn brand mentions in credible, independent content. This is digital PR for the AI era — getting named in industry publications, roundups, expert articles, and analyses. You’re not chasing the link; you’re chasing the mention, because mentions are what the correlation data rewards. A quote in a respected industry piece can do more for AI authority than a dozen low-quality backlinks.

2. Get into the comparison and “best of” content. Category and comparison prompts (“best X,” “X alternatives,” “X vs Y”) are where deals are shortlisted. The answers to those are assembled from listicles, roundups, and comparison pages. Being present — accurately — in that content is non-negotiable. Pitch to be included where you legitimately belong; create honest comparison content of your own.

3. Show up where your buyers debate, especially communities. Reddit is consistently among the most-cited domains in AI answers for a reason: it’s where people give candid, specific recommendations. We wrote a whole piece on why Reddit citations are GEO gold — the short version is participate genuinely, be useful, never astroturf. Forced or fake community presence is both obvious and counterproductive.

4. Invest in YouTube and other high-signal platforms. Given how strongly YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility, video isn’t optional for many categories. Reviews, demos, explainers, and being mentioned in other people’s videos all feed the entity.

5. Build branded demand. Brand search volume correlates with AI visibility because it’s a proxy for real-world salience — models (and the sources they read) reflect brands people actually talk about and look for. The unglamorous truth: the brand-building work that drives people to search for you by name also helps AI take you seriously.

A note on patience and honesty

Authority is the slowest layer to move, and the one most vulnerable to shortcuts that backfire. Mass-produced mentions, fake reviews, and astroturfed threads get detected, devalued, and occasionally turned into a trust problem that’s worse than the authority gap you started with. The brands that win this layer do it the boring way: by being genuinely useful and genuinely talked about, consistently, for months. Earned authority compounds; manufactured authority decays.

Your Authority checklist

Authority checklist
  • You’ve extracted your citation target list from your audit — the domains models actually cite for your category.
  • You have an active program to earn brand mentions in credible, independent publications (PR for mentions, not just links).
  • You’re present and accurate in the “best [category]” and “alternatives” content that feeds comparison answers.
  • You have a genuine, useful presence in the communities (Reddit, forums) relevant to your buyers.
  • You’re building a YouTube footprint — your own and via mentions in others’.
  • You’re tracking brand mentions and brand search demand over time, not just backlinks.
  • You can see your citation share vs competitors and are closing the biggest gaps first.
